Upcoming Genome Canada Funding Opportunities

2015 Large-Scale Applied Research Project (LSARP) Competition: Natural Resources and the Environment: Sector Challenges – Genomic Solutions
This initiative includes areas such as genomics research related to energy, mining, forestry, water stewardship, wildlife management/conservation and bioproducts that help conserve natural resources and protect the environment. It also includes the use of genomics to identify key elements that impact ecosystem structure, function and diversity. The competition will leverage $78 million in funding where Genome Canada will contribute $26 million to support 1/3 of project budgets ranging from $2 - $10 million over a 3 – 4 year term. The remaining 2/3 of the budget must come from eligible co-funding sources such as companies, industry consortia, or provincial grants for example. Find more information on LSARP here.

Genomics Application Partnerships Program (GAPP) Competition
GAPP is designed for end-users (may be a start-up company) to partner with academics for the development of genomic tools applied to industry driven problems. As part of this program, end-users would need to invest a minimum of 1/3 (can be a combination of in-kind and cash) of the project budget and Genome Canada will invest a maximum of 1/3 of the project budget to support genomics based activities. GAPP is an ongoing program with a 3-stage process: EOI, Pitch, and Supplementary Proposal. The first two stages are due on a rolling intake basis (EOI and Pitch) with the last stage (Supplementary Proposal) having a deadline. The next deadline for the Supplementary proposal will be September 27, 2015.  Find more information on GAPP here.

Disruptive Innovation in Genomics (DIG) Competition

The DIG competition is a new competition that will be officially launched in June 2015 and will address project ideas examining the development of disruptive innovation in the field of genomics defined as “new genomics-based technology or the application of an existing technology from another field, applied to the field of genomics, that is truly transformative in that it has the potential to either displace an existing technology, disrupt an existing market or create a new market. A disruptive innovation offers the capability to do things not previously possible and is not an incremental improvement of an existing technology.” Find more information on DIG here.

Genome Alberta will support applicants and help them put forth strong proposals for Genome Canada funded competitions. For more information contact Harleen Ghuttora, Program Coordinator, Genome Alberta.

About Genome Canada

History
Genome Canada is a not-for-profit corporation created in February 2000. Genome Canada is the primary funding and information resource relating to genomics and proteomics research in Canada.

Its mandate is to develop and implement a national strategy in genomics and proteomics research for the benefit of all Canadians in key selected areas such as health, agriculture, environment, forestry, fisheries and new technology development. Genome Canada is committed to a leadership role on the ethical, environmental, economic, legal and social (GE3LS) issues and potential implications associated with genomics and proteomics research, and to communicating with Canadians on these and other issues.

Genome Canada’s innovative business model is built on the premise of funding and managing large-scale and multidisciplinary, internationally peer-reviewed research projects and science and technology innovation centres. It also includes the co-funding of projects with both domestic and international partners.

Funding
Federal government investments in Genome Canada total $915 million as of March 31, 2010. This investment represents 50 per cent of the funding of research projects and technology innovation centres. The agreement with the Government of Canada stipulates that Genome Canada will raise the other 50 per cent of funding from other sources.
