2006 Hall of Fame Inductee
Dr. Lorne Tyrrell MD, PhD, FRCP is the former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, at the University of Alberta. He is a Professor of Medicine, Biochemistry, and Medical Microbiology and Immunology, and the Director of the Glaxo Heritage Research Institute, University of Alberta.
His exceptional contributions to medical research have been recognized by his peers through the ASTech Award for Innovation and Science in Alberta, the Rutherford Award as "Outstanding Teacher for Undergraduate Students", the Kaplin Award for Excellence in Research, and the Prix Galien Canada Medal for Research for his groundbreaking work on antiviral drugs for Hepatitis B.
Dr. Tyrrell has received the gold medal by the Canadian Liver Foundation and the Canadian Association for the Study of Liver; the Alberta Order of Excellence; appointed as an officer of the Order of Canada by the Government of Canada; and the F.N.G. Starr Award from the Canadian Medical Association; and the Principal Award of the Manning Foundation.
Dr. Tyrrell is the chair of several organizations including CIHR/GSK virology at the UofA; the Alberta Health Quality Council; the Institute of Health Economics, and is a member of the Medical Advisory Committee of the Gairdner Foundation, the Research Council of the Canadian Institute of Academic Research.
Dr. Tyrrell is the former CEO of Virexx Medical Corp. and continues to be active on numerous industry boards.
