The rising global burden of chronic disease presents a challenge to healthcare that is dependent upon an unsustainable model of expensive pharmacologies. Disease prevention via a scientifically-guided translational medicine approach to diet is one solution that also addresses health equity. Advances in dietary disease prevention and modification are underway through the identification of: 1) specific health defense processes required for physiological homeostasis; 2) bioactives present in diet (ingredients, foods, beverages) that influence cellular processes involved in health defenses; 3) cellular activities influenced by bioactives using biopharmaceutical assays; 4) coordination of research efforts between life scientists and food scientists; and 5) technological solutions to identify individualized health needs and vulnerabilities that may be precisely addressed with diet. This presentation will describe the potential for transformational change in both public health and life science research by integrating these 5 areas, and progress being made by the Angiogenesis Foundation. Major challenges to and key opportunities for innovation will be discussed.
