Aquila Diagnostic Systems
Aquila is launching the Accutas, a portable device developed in Edmonton, Alberta which will soon help combat the global malaria epidemic.
Aquila Diagnostic System’s Accutas is a portable device able to detect
blood-borne pathogens using a toaster sized base unit and tiny
disposable cartridges.
The Accutas works quickly and at the fraction of the cost of a conventional lab test, which allows the device to be deployed in remote locations, providing necessary diagnostic capabilities in a variety of situations.
Perhaps the most promising use for Aquila’s technology is in diagnosing malaria in rural areas of Africa where malaria is often endemic. Because the disease is treatable with drugs, early detection of the blood-borne parasite is critical. Early detection and treatment reduce both the length of the disease and the likelihood of death. Current methods of diagnosing malaria in the field are not as sensitive as the Accutas.
Once it obtains regulatory approval, the Accutas will certainly become a critical tool in the arsenal used to combat this global health concern.
