From the President: BIO 2016 Recap & New Member Benefits
June 29, 2016
Dear BioAlberta Members,
From June 6-9, BioAlberta led the Alberta delegation to the BIO International Convention in San Francisco. The delegation included the Minister of Economic Development & Trade, the Honourable Deron Bilous, along with the Deputy Minister, Jason Krips, as well as departmental staff. Several Alberta life science companies were part of the delegation, presenting their companies and products while attending meetings with potential partners and investors. SolAeroMed Inc., Entos Pharmaceuticals Inc., KMT Hepatech Inc., and Aquila Diagnostic Systems Inc. attended through the AITF micro voucher program. Additional attending companies were Impact Consulting, Resverlogix Corp., and SinoVeda Canada Inc. The companies met with potential customers and investors at the Canada Pavilion, where BioAlberta staff had arranged for and manned the Alberta booth. BioAlberta thanks Alberta Innovates Technology Futures (AITF) and Alberta Innovates Health Solutions (AIHS) for its support of the micro voucher program.
BioAlberta arranged a meeting of the Minister with several large pharmaceutical companies as well as Innovative Medicines Canada. The Minister gave an summary of the Alberta government’s economic development priorities, and was presented with an overview of the pharmaceutical industry and its economic footprint in Alberta. In addition, discussions were held on opportunities in economic diversification and health care.
BioAlberta’s activities at BIO were capped off by the popular Alberta Reception, which drew over 180 attendees on the evening of the 7th. The event provided an exceptional opportunity for attending companies and government officials to make new contacts, develop relationships with potential partners, and renew acquaintances. Major announcements that night included AbbVie’s signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Minister Economic Development & Trade, Aquila Diagnostic Systems closing of a $1.75 million Series A financing round with Benslie International Ltd., and Janssen’s announcement of the winners of the Prostate Cancer Innovation Fund, a part of the J&J Health Innovation Partnership.
The event was a great success for all involved and BioAlberta looks forward to leading next year’s delegation to the 2017 BIO International Convention in San Diego.
Additionally, BioAlberta is finalizing arrangements to provide member companies with a range of new and improved benefits, including discounts on hotel rooms, car rentals, as well as lab and office supplies. We will be announcing these new benefits soon.
